This is an imageOaxaca, the name of the state as well as its capitol city comes from the Nahuatl word HUAXYACAC which means "in the nose of the guajes", (edible pods that grow on guaje trees) because of the abundance of guajes that were growing there.

Oaxaca is located in the southeastern region of Mexico, to the north it shares borders with the states of Puebla and Veracruz, the south lies the Pacific coast, to the east the state of Chiapas and to the west the state of Guerrero.

Oaxaca, at 95,364 square kilometers, is the fifth largest Mexican state. Sixteen ethnic groups share this mountainous state with peaks as high as 3,000 meters.

Be it via plane, train or highway, the city of Oaxaca is well communicated with the rest of the Republic and the world.
By plane: Oaxaca has an International airport, which receives scheduled and chartered flights from the rest of Mexico and all over the world.

First and second class buses arrive in Oaxaca daily from Mexico City, Puebla, Tehuantepec, Juchitan, Puerto Angel, Puerto Escondido, the Huatulco Bays, Veracruz and Chiapas among many more.
The train arrives from Mexico city, Puebla and Tehuacán. So, it is fair to say that it is really easy to arrive in Oaxaca, and it is easier to stay.

A four and a half hour drive over 465 Kms. passing through the state of Puebla on the new super-highway, links this beautiful colonial city to Mexico City , and makes for an easy half day drive through the spectacular scenery and fascinating sights of the canyon country.

The Huatulco Bays are only 272 Kms. Away from the city, the beautiful beaches of Puerto Escondido only 263 Kms., and Puerto Angel a mere 249.
